Ticks are active in spring and early summer in local brushy areas and the Rocky Mountain wood tick is the most common species that bites people and pets, causing symptoms similar to the flu from Colorado tick fever.
Residents are advised to check themselves and their pets after outdoor activities and use approved repellents (such as DEET) along with proper tick removal methods to lower the risk of illness.
