BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Loveland continued its Heart Improvement Plan to revitalize 19 downtown blocks and update its century-old stormwater system—while local bakery B Sweet Cupcakes struggles with confusing signage that detours customers. The downtown development authority says it is boosting promotions to support businesses, and construction outside the bakery is set to finish this November.  Denver7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado students will be able to apply for college for free during the Colorado Free Application Days from October 7 to 9—32 public colleges and many private institutions will waive application fees as Gov. Jared Polis said financial barriers will be removed. Students should prepare their materials now to take advantage of this opportunity when it begins.  CBS Colorado

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Thomas Gifford, an Economics PhD candidate at Colorado State University, leads a study that examines why wildfires in Colorado are growing larger + more unpredictable.  CBS Colorado
  • Colorado experts said that even with cool fall weather, trees and shrubs still need water because the drought continues. John Murgel (a CSU specialist) said homeowners should check soil moisture with a probe (if the soil is dry more than two inches down, water is needed) to keep plants healthy through winter.  CBS Colorado

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congress must pass a funding resolution by midnight on Sept. 30 to avoid a government shutdown that could furlough federal workers and close national parks, affecting local services in Loveland and nearby areas. Gov. Polis said he would work with federal officials to keep Colorado's parks open — and may use state funds if needed to support tourism during the busy season.  The Coloradoan

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sprout Organics is expanding its recall of sweet potato, apple and spinach pouches after tests showed potentially high lead levels—products sold online, at Walgreens and independent retailers in 28 states including Colorado should be returned for a refund. No illnesses have been reported, and the recall covers items with best by dates from Oct 29 to Feb 4.  CBS Colorado
  • Hospitals in Colorado lost $4 billion on Medicaid and Medicare last year and face high uncompensated care costs. In Loveland, Banner Health closed its emergency department this month and Delta Health closed its maternity unit last week—adding to the shortage of care in rural areas.  CBS Colorado
